Frequently Asked Questions.
-
What exactly is chicory, and why is it blended with coffee?Chicory is the roasted root of the Cichorium intybus plant. When roasted and ground, it has a rich, slightly bitter, and earthy flavour that complements coffee well — adding body, depth, and a distinctive character to the cup. In South Indian coffee culture, chicory blending is a long-standing tradition that enhances the sensory experience of filter coffee and extends the yield of ground coffee.
-
What coffee-to-chicory ratios are available?Narasu's offers coffee-chicory blends across a wide range of ratios:70:30 and 60:40 (coffee:chicory). These are available in both Roast & Ground and Instant Coffee formats. Custom ratios can also be developed on request.
-
Are chicory blends available in both instant and roast & ground formats?Yes. Chicory blends are produced in both formats. In Roast & Ground, chicory is blended with ground coffee before packing. In Instant Coffee, chicory-blended soluble coffee is produced through our integrated extraction and spray drying process — available in both spray dried and agglomerated formats.
-
Is there growing international demand for chicory coffee blends?Yes — particularly in markets with large South Asian diaspora communities (UK, UAE, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, Canada), where consumers seek the authentic taste of South Indian filter coffee. There is also growing interest in chicory coffee among health-conscious consumers globally, as chicory is a natural source of inulin — a prebiotic dietary fibre.
-
Does chicory affect the caffeine content of the coffee?Yes. Since chicory contains no caffeine, blending it with coffee dilutes the overall caffeine content proportionally. A 70:30 coffee-chicory blend, for example, will have approximately 30% less caffeine than a 100% pure coffee product of the same weight. This can be an advantage for consumers seeking a lower-caffeine option without sacrificing flavour intensity.
-
Can Narasu's develop a custom chicory blend for my specific market?Absolutely. We have decades of experience in blend formulation and can develop a coffee-chicory ratio tailored to your market's flavour preferences, pricing requirements, and consumer profile. Our R&D team will work with you through a sample development and approval process before moving to production.
-
What labelling and regulatory considerations apply to chicory blends in export markets?Chicory must be declared as an ingredient on product labels in most markets. Labelling requirements — including ingredient declaration, nutritional information, and language requirements — vary by destination country. Our export team is experienced in supporting buyers with label compliance for their specific market. We advise discussing destination market requirements at the enquiry stage.
